CleanSOx Compact Exhaust Gas Cleaning System (EGCS)

The new CleanSOx Compact Hybrid Allstream Exhaust Gas Cleaning System (EGCS) from our Norwegian partner Clean Marine AS is a big step forward. Compared with the previous scrubber, the height is reduced by 66%, the weight by 30% and the costs by 30%. Through its significant size and weight reduction design, this Exhaust Gas Cleaning System does therefore not necessitate or involve a major design change or rebuilding of an existing or new building vessel to fit the equipment onboard. With this compact scrubber version, designed for seagoing vessels from 400 GT (gross tonnage) and above, you could take advantage of the low heavy fuel oil (HFO) price and comply with the IMO Sulphur requirements.

Characteristic features

The patented CleanSOx Compact Exhaust Gas Cleaning System (EGCS) is designed to meet the needs of the maritime industry and offers proven allstream exhaust gas handling meaning all exhaust sources on board, including boilers, can be served by one common EGCS unit; enabling a fast return on investment.

The scrubber works equally well in open (liquid one time through) and closed (liquid recirculation) modes while seawater and alkali is used to regulate the sulphur trapping efficiency in both modes. The EGCS can operate in all types of water (including low alkaline and saline water) in either mode and without loss of efficiency.

The CleanSOx Compact EGCS is therefore an optimal solution for the marine environment and represents a futureproof scrubber system for the ship owner, adhering to regulatory variety in all waters. The system has also the ability to combine natural and added alkalinity in open loop operation. This means it will provide high cleaning efficiency while maintaining a pH>6 at the outlet; the pH limit for the United States (US). This makes the effluent compliant with all IMO and regional/local regulations, including the 0.1% sulfur limit in the so-called Sulphur Emission Control Areas (SECAs) by 1 January 2015 and the worldwide limit for sulphur in fuel oil used on board ships of 0.50% m/m (mass by mass) from 1 January 2020. The CleanSOx Compact EGCS is tailor made too any engine size and vessel.

Business case

A Norwegian shipping company will install the CleanSOx Compact Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems (EGCS) for seven chemical tankers (19900 DWT) of its fleet. For this shipping company this compact scrubber is the optimal solution, considering parameters like: hybrid, allstream, size, weight, design and the total cost to have it installed and commissioned.

CleanSOx family

The CleanSOx Compact Exhaust Gas Cleaning System (EGCS) is the most compact scrubber version from the new Clean Marine AS assortment, introduced in 2017. Besides this significant size and weight reduction design, our Norwegian partner has developed two other scrubber designs: the CleanSOx Tower and CleanSOx MK III (see figure 1). Besides the dimensions, these two other scrubber versions have the same properties as the CleanSOx Compact design. This makes the possibility that one of these Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems fits in your existing or new building seagoing vessel, more feasible.

Funding and grants

Besides our specialized knowledge and expertise of Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems, we are also able to investigate the availability of grants and forms of financing.

One of the forms of financing we would like to bring to your attention, is the Export Credit Norway. When you invest in an Exhaust Gas Cleaning System (EGCS) from Clean Marine AS as a retrofit solution, you could take advantage of the loan amount, up to 85% of the contract value. The repayment period for this scrubber is between 5 and 8,5 years per single loans. The interest rate is based on the CIRR-rate or Market based interest rate (IBOR).

CO2-neutral

With the waste heat recovery system (efficiency PACK) from our German partner Orcan Energy AG, you could make the most compact Exhaust Gas Cleaning System (EGCS) CO2-neutral. Thanks to the efficiency PACK you have the possibility to generate electricity by using the waste heat from the exhaust gas and cooling water from your main and auxiliary engines. This outcome (active power) can be used for feeding the waste water pumps of the EGCS.
