Green retrofit multipurpose vessel business case

By: Jeroen Berger, July 11, 2017

In 2015 VICUSdt, our partner from Vigo (Spain), has collaborated in different “green” retrofit projects with European ship owners. One of them has been announced recently by Carbon War Room (CWR) as a successful “green” retrofit project after a fruitful cooperation between the ship owner HAMMONIA Reederei from Hamburg and the charterer Intermarine from New Orleans. The “green” retrofit project concerns the Industrial Ruby, Industrial Royal and Industrial Revolution; the three multipurpose vessels from HAMMONIA Reederei.

About the HAMMONIA Reederei and the multipurpose vessels

The HAMMONIA Reederei is a ship management company. This German organization manages a modern fleet of 50 containerships ranging in size from 868 TEU to 10,000 TEU, 2 bulk carriers and 10 multipurpose vessels.

If we are looking at the multipurpose vessels Industrial Ruby (see Figure 1), Industrial Royal and Industrial Revolution, then every multipurpose vessel is 134.7 meters in length and 21.5 meters in width and has a capacity of 10,536 DWT.

VICUSdt’s contribution in this “green” retrofit project

By making use of advanced Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software, VICUSdt has designed the new optimized bulbous bow and a bulb for the existing rudder for each multipurpose vessel. Furthermore they have carried out trim optimization calculations for the new configuration. VICUSdt has finally delivered 3D geometry of the modified hull to the yard and steel drawings for the rudder modification.

Awarded grant

Carbon War Room (CWR) awarded HAMMONIA Reederei a US$120,000 grant to install continuous monitoring software to measure, verify, and publicize the fuel and carbon savings. The data will be analyzed by University College London (UCL) over a five-year period with initial results which will be released to the industry six months post-drydock.

What was the result?

For each multipurpose vessel a 25% reduction in fuel consumption is expected after the “green” retrofit project. HAMMONIA Reederei was impressed by VICUSdt’s practical approach.
