11.clean marine secures EGCS contract with Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding
 
clean marine has been selected by hudong-zhonghua shipbuilding in china to supply exhaust gas cleaning systems (egcs) for two 38,000 dwt. chemical tankers being built for stolt tankers and nyk stolt tankers. the two vessels are built in a series of six sister ships, where the remaining four vessels will be designed with the flexibility to add an egcs at a later stage. the order will enable these new vessels to comply with sulphur emissions legislation without switching to more expensive fuels. nils høy-petersen, ceo in clean marine, states that the contract reflects the growing demand for clean marine's unique and competitive multi-stream egcs solution. "we are very pleased to experience a breaktrough also in the chinese shipbuilding market and to be selected by hudong-zhonghua, a yard which during its 70 years history has delivered over 3,000 quality ships. we also look forward to delivering a cost-effective solution to help stolt tankers comply with the new emissions regulations which comes into force from 2015", he says. stolt tankers operates globally and has one of the world's largest and most sophisticated fleet of chemical tankers. the stolt tankers fleet consists of more than 150 ships and barges. stolt tankers have a strict focus on safety and environmental protection, and the egcs from clean marine will ensure that the new vessels operate well within all applicable local and international regulatory requirements. clean marine has developed an egcs based on the advanced vortex chamber technology that provides unique cleaning efficiency. the system's integrated fan and gas recirculation technology allows the one egcs unit to simultaneously serve several combustion units. the system supplied to stolt tankers is a hybrid system that allows the vessel to operate seamlessly in all types of water (including low alkaline and saline water) without loss of efficiency. furthermore, the clean marine egcs meets the current ph limit for washwater discharge in europe and usa with good margin. "for vessels operating in european or us waters, inside the emission control areas (ecas), a maximum sulphur limit of 0.1 percent will apply from january 2015," says høy-petersen. door: jeroen berger, 26 september 2014 de zeer omstreden europese zwavelrichtlijn is een veelbesproken thema. overeind blijft dat scheepsbrandstof vanaf 1 januari 2015 in de seca-gebieden (noordzee, het kanaal en de baltische zee) maximaal 0,1 procent zwavel mag bevatten. voor de zeevaart, die het economisch toch al moeilijk heeft, is het vooruitzicht van een nieuwe wetgeving voor de uitstoot van zwavel niet eenvoudig te aanvaarden. maar het ziet ernaar uit dat er helaas voor hen weinig aan te veranderen is en zullen ze door de zure appel moeten heen bijten. wat wordt voor veel rederijen de schone brandstof strategie? schakelt men over op ... diesel of lng, of vaart men gewoon door op hfo met gebruik van scrubber technologie? investeren in scrubber technologie. waarom eigenlijk? voor rederijen die veel varen op de noordzee, de oostzee of het kanaal loont het de moeite om een scrubber te installeren. niet alleen omdat ze daarmee voldoen aan de strenge zwavelrichtlijn, ook zijn dergelijke installaties al op zeer korte termijn winstgevend doordat ze al binnen enkele jaren zijn terugverdiend. niet alleen de haalbaarheidsstudies van berger maritiem bevestigen deze korte terugverdientijden, ook uit het eu-retrofit-project is gebleken dat terugverdientijden van 1,6 en 0,8 jaar wel degelijk haalbaar zijn. wereldwijd zijn er diverse aanbieders. de belangrijkste en meest hoopvol zijn wärtsilä, alfa laval, ... ... en green tech ..., die inmiddels bij elkaar ruim tweehonderd scrubber installaties hebben verkocht. nog maar enkele daarvan zijn in bedrijf. dus veel ervaring is er nog niet. maar het feit dat belangrijke west-europese rederijen als spliethoff, holland america line en stolt tankers wel hebben geïnvesteerd, toont aan dat er voldoende vertrouwen is in de ontwikkeling van deze technologie. scrubber financiering voor handen de toepassingen van scrubbers leidt vaak tot grote investeringen, die veel rederijen vandaag de dag maar niet rond kunnen krijgen. zo loopt de investering in een scrubber al gauw op tot in de (vele) miljoenen. financiering van één of meerdere scrubber installaties zal dus voor veel rederijen bijzonder wenselijk zijn. echter laten de lokale banken en overheden het volledig over aan de maritieme sector en bieden zij op dit moment nog geen oplossing rondom deze veelbesproken problematiek. er zijn echter wel degelijk financieringsmogelijkheden voor handen. zo verstrekt bijvoorbeeld de export credit norway al financieringen speciaal gericht op scrubber retrofit projecten. de concurrerende tarieven en condities van deze kredietverstrekker maken het voor veel rederijen extra interessant, indien zij besluiten tot financiering van hun scrubbers over te gaan. echter wel van belang is, dat de scrubber door een noorse scrubberfabrikant geleverd moet zijn. gelukkig zijn er genoeg noorse fabrikanten op de markt, waarbij de scrubbers concurrerend zijn en ook daadwerkelijk voldoen aan alle eisen die de imo stelt. ... ... en green tech ... zijn hier een goed voorbeeld van. bunker funding berger maritiem heeft veel onderzoek gedaan naar de inpassing van scrubber technologie. en hoewel er veel belangstelling is voor scrubbers, is gebrek aan financiële middelen een veelgehoord probleem. hoewel lokale banken en overheden geen oplossingen zien, zijn wij alsnog opzoek gegaan naar een middel om de financiering voor de installatie van scrubbers in bestaande schepen mogelijk te maken. het financieringsinstrument wat berger maritiem heeft ontwikkeld wordt het bunker funding programma genoemd. wat is bunker funding precies? middels een individuele toeslag op een controleerbare marktprijs van de hfo bunker wordt een jaarlijkse premie geheven die moet zorgen voor rente, aflossing en risicodekking van de scrubber investering. deze premie is hierbij substantieel lager dan de meerprijs die men zou moeten betalen voor het overschakelen op mgo. nadat de duur van het contract is verstreken, vervalt de premie en kunnen de reders maximaal profiteren van de lage hfo-prijs. dankzij bunker funding heeft de klant zogezegd vanaf dag één het voordeel doordat zij kunnen blijven profiteren van de goedkopere brandstof hfo, zonder zelf de noodzakelijke investering te hoeven doen. bent u benieuwd of het bunker funding principe ook voor uw organisatie iets kan betekenen of bent u bijvoorbeeld geïnteresseerd geraakt naar de mogelijkheden van export credit norway? neem in beide gevallen gerust contact met ons op voor meer informatie. lees meer op onze blogpagina uw gegevens worden vertrouwelijk behandeld. bekijk ons privacy beleid voor meer informatie.
