Meet the new inland tanker Pendolari from De Vries family

By: Jeroen Berger, October 05, 2021

For the De Vries family, their newest addition, inland tanker Pendolari, came into service last March. Besides the fact that it has become a high-quality and efficient inland vessel, the Pendolari has also proved to be very quiet in practice. For example, the 135-metre tanker behaved particularly calmly during all extreme tests during the sea trials. For example, a noise level of only 43.1 decibels was measured in one of the bedrooms. The Pendolari was delivered turn-key by Galle & Roodhart Scheepsbouw. Together with our partner VICUSdt we were allowed to supply the ship propellers.

To achieve an efficient, low-noise and low-vibration ship propeller design, we designed them with CFD. CFD stands for Computational Fluid Dynamics and is an approach that can best be compared to towing tank tests in a large basin in which the ship model has to undergo the preset waves, but then digitally.

Thanks to this scientific approach, we have not only been able to understand the ship's hull hydrodynamics, but we have also been able to calculate a speed forecast based on current data and to perform an accurate ship propeller performance calculation. The detailed cavitation analysis has ultimately ensured that noise, vibration and erosion damage are kept to a minimum.

We thank Mark Roodhart for the trust and wish the ship owners Stefan and Wimke de Vries - Smedeman many more efficient and above all quiet sailing hours.
