As you may know, a marine diesel engine emits exhaust gas, which includes poisonous elements, such as nitrogen oxide (NOx), sulfur oxide (SOx) and particulate matter (PM). They may cause substances environmental pollution and to damage human health. From these reasons, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) will enforce more stringent regulations.
A Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) is one of the reducing technologies of nitrogen oxide (NOx). A typical SCR system consists of a catalyst made of titanium-vanadium and a nozzle to jet mist of urea water into upper side of the catalyst. When the temperature of the exhaust gas is kept enough high, the urea is converted to ammonia, and NOx in the exhaust gas is converted to nitrogen and water by the catalysis.
Through the use of a SCR catalyst for example from Fischer-Abgastechnik GmbH & Co. KG, the marine diesel engine often operates with a higher combustion temperature. For this reason the possibility exists that you can not only reduce the NOx emissions, but in some cases even the fuel consumption of your vessel.
