Zeeland Maritime Services (ZMS) delivers third vessel mts Lombardijen from a series of new, sustainable inland tankers for Maaskade Group

The successful sea trial of mts Lombardijen took place on 9 March. This 86-meter tanker will sail for Maaskade Group, based in Zwijndrecht, and is the third vessel in a series of new, environmentally friendly tankers. Just like her two predecessors mts Ommoord and mts Sardonyx, these inland waterway vessels were built by Zeeland Maritime Services (ZMS). In addition to the fact that these tankers are specially made for the transport of edible oil (approximately 2,600 tons), they are also designed from an environmental point of view.

For example, the emissions of nitrogen oxide (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) had to be significantly reduced. To achieve this, a diesel particulate filter (DPF) and SCR catalyst from our German partner Fischer Abgastechnik has been installed behind each main and bow thruster engine. Emission measurements have shown that these compactly designed systems reduce PM and NOx emissions further than Stage V prescribes.

This not only responds to the current nitrogen problem, but also to the expected labeling system that values the emission performance of inland vessels. When this label is awarded, the emissions determined in a field measurement are leading and not the type approval of the engine. In the future, these main and bow thruster engines - supplemented by our exhaust gas aftertreatment systems - could therefore be considered more or less equivalent to Stage V certified engines.

Since 2017, Zeeland Maritime Services, based in Wemeldinge, has been working hard on building new, future-proof ship designs. With the "Ommoord", "Sardonyx" and recently also the "Lombardijen", Maaskade Group has been able to add three sustainable inland waterway tankers to their fleet. This now consists of more than sixty tankers.
