Why is a waste management system a must for your company?

By: Jeroen Berger, August 16, 2017

The maritime industry is facing an increasing number of environmental challenges. One of these, is the prevention of water pollution of waste by ships. For example, the IMO Marpol 73/78 Annex V calls for the regulations for the prevention of pollution by garbage (all kinds of victual, domestic and operational waste) from ships by 1 January 2013. Besides that, the ISO 14001 international standard has been introduced for an effective environmental management system.

The fulfilment of these environmental standards can be an expensive matter, in case that there is no waste management. Why is a waste management system a must for your company?

Comply with Marpol 73/78 Annex V

Ship owners shall comply with more restrictive measures. Ranging from having on board a Garbage Disposal Placard, a Garbage Management Plan to a Garbage Record Book. One by one measures for the prevention of pollution by garbage from ships.

Compress the food waste

Food waste weighs heavy. The unwanted bacterial are growing fast, including the bad smells. With an appropriate waste management system all the food waste can be collected. Then the food waste will be stored in a separate storage tank. This will make the job much easier for the crew and this is better for the hygiene in the galley too.

Reduce the volume for certain types of waste

It is not good for the environment if materials like plastic, wood, paperboard, paper, glass or metal can be found in the water. There are systems on the market whereby the volume of certain types of waste can be reduced to 90%. What’s left can be transported to the waste tip.

Reduce the costs

There is now an ever-increasing awareness about the costs associated with food waste. For example, the high cost may be related to the space on board and the processing of garbage on shore.

With the use of a waste management system you are able to optimize the performance of your vessel to reduce the costs. We from Berger Maritiem will be pleased to advice you with choosing the right waste management system for your type of ship regarding the more restrictive regulations for the prevention of pollution by waste from ships.
