Kooiman Marine Group has realized special conversion project Zwerver I

By: Jeroen Berger, October 11, 2020

After a rigorous renovation of converting the former work vessel Anna-B from 2006, Van Stee Offshore has added a Multi-Purpose Diesel-electric DP-2 Support Vessel to its fleet. With a draft of only 2.30 meters, a free deck space of 800 m2 and after all work done by shipyard Kooiman Marine Group, the newly named Zwerver I is widely applicable for both dredging and the offshore oil and wind industry.

After a conversion period of 11 months, the Zwerver I is equiped with a new hydraulic anchor handling winch, two tugger winches, two telescopic spud poles, and the number of thrusters has doubled. Where the former working vessel Anna-B was equipped with four thrusters, the Zwerver I is equiped with two new electric bow thrusters including two fixed pitch propellers in a nozzle from our partner VICUSdt (see photo 1).

In order to achieve an efficient, low-noise and almost vibration free design, the ship's propellers and nozzles are designed with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software. This approach can best be compared with towing tank tests in a large basin in which the ship model has to undergo the preset waves, but then in a digital way.

This method has led to a good understanding of the hull hydrodynamics, an accurate propeller performance calculation and a speed forecast calculated from actual data. The propeller design has been done in order to minimize cavitation in the bollard pull condition, where more service conditions are studied.

We congratulate Kooiman Marine Group with realizing this special conversion project and wish Van Stee Offshore a lot of success with this beautiful ship.
