Tanker Nieuwe Maas with CFD-Optimized Propeller Nozzles

Author: Jeroen Berger • Publication date:

Hydrodynamic efficiency plays a crucial role in modern inland shipping by reducing operational costs and lowering emissions, including CO2, a major greenhouse gas. The Nieuwe Maas, one of the advanced chemical tankers within the Quattro project of shipping company Dari, is a prime example of this technological advancement. Measuring 110 meters in length and 11.45 meters in width, this vessel is designed to minimize fuel consumption and reduce environmental impact. This is achieved through advanced maritime solutions, including CFD-optimized propeller nozzles and propellers below the waterline, which maximize hydrodynamic efficiency. Operated by Interstream Barging, this inland vessel is the third in a series of four mineral oil tankers within the Dari Quattro project, combining safety, environmental sustainability, and operational efficiency in an innovative manner. Thanks to modern shipbuilding techniques and hydrodynamic optimizations, this vessel operates efficiently with a minimized ecological footprint.

Innovative Ship Design for Maximum Performance and Fuel Efficiency

The hull of the Nieuwe Maas and its sister ships Belize, Amstel, and Bermuda is based on the De Jonge ECO-NOMY concept by Gebr. De Jonge. This concept focuses on a balanced ratio between cargo capacity and hydrodynamic resistance, contributing to an efficient and sustainable ship design. The advanced hull shape and innovative hydrodynamic solutions significantly reduce fuel consumption, directly leading to cost savings and a smaller environmental footprint.

CFD Optimization: Enhanced Propulsion Efficiency and Lower Emissions

A key aspect of M/T Nieuwe Maas is the application of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) in optimizing propulsion components. CFD simulations refine the vessel’s hydrodynamic properties, ensuring optimal performance. The CFD-optimized propeller nozzles, for instance, enhance water flow and reduce resistance, directly improving energy efficiency and lowering fuel consumption. Developed by our specialized partner, these optimized nozzles ensure that propeller thrust is utilized more effectively, increasing efficiency and minimizing energy loss.

Additionally, the optimized propeller nozzles contribute to quieter and smoother sailing, enhancing onboard comfort while further reducing environmental impact. In combination with the CFD-optimized propellers, supplied by our propulsion partner, the entire hydrodynamic system of the Nieuwe Maas is elevated to a higher level. This results in significantly lower operational costs and more sustainable energy use.

Improved Maneuverability with Van Der Velde Aqua Logic Rudders

In addition to fuel efficiency, maneuverability is crucial for an inland vessel. The Nieuwe Maas and its sister ships are equipped with three Van Der Velde Aqua Logic rudders, providing maximum maneuverability and course stability. This not only ensures smoother sailing but also enhances the ship’s safety and operational flexibility in narrow waterways and complex port environments. Thanks to this advanced rudder technology, steering response is improved, contributing to more efficient and safer navigation.
