Since 2013, Berger Maritiem has evolved from a consultancy focused on sustainability in shipping into a trading and consultancy company specialising in sustainable maritime technologies, compliance-related matters and practical decarbonization solutions. We support shipowners, shipping companies, shipyards, design offices, ship chandlers, maritime suppliers and commercial vessel operators in selecting, supplying and implementing proven, effective and economically viable technologies, systems and solutions for retrofit and newbuild projects.
We serve inland shipping, seagoing shipping, coastal shipping, offshore, naval, fisheries, dredging, towage, workboats and other specialised applications within the maritime industry. Our support focuses on vessels, fleets and broader challenges within shipping companies, including carbon dioxide reduction (CO2), nitrogen oxide reduction (NOx), particulate matter reduction (PM), energy efficiency, fuel consumption, operational efficiency, vessel performance optimization, fleet strategy, decarbonization of vessels and fleets, International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations, European maritime legislation and regulations, subsidy and financing opportunities, and maritime compliance.
Berger Maritiem supports sustainability projects across the maritime industry, from strategy through to technical optimization. We develop sustainable roadmaps towards zero-emission and climate-neutral shipping, independently or in cooperation with specialised maritime consultants. Within these roadmaps, decisions relating to alternative fuels and energy carriers, low-emission technologies, energy savings and emission reduction are translated into feasible steps for vessels, fleets and future investments.
In addition, together with our partners, we support maritime compliance, ESG-related matters concerning environmental, social and governance issues, environmental impact calculations, improvement analyses and studies for vessel performance optimization. This includes support relating to the Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP), Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI), Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII), Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Inventory of Hazardous Materials (IHM), chemical management and, through a specialised partner, the generation and management of Material Declarations (MD) and Supplier’s Declarations of Conformity (SDoC).
We also support Express Analyses for targeted feasibility and optimization studies for existing vessels and retrofit projects. These analyses identify measures above and below the waterline. Above the waterline, the focus is on technologies capable of reducing the environmental footprint of a vessel or fleet. Below the waterline, the focus is on hydrodynamic optimization, including Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations and CFD analyses of hull forms, bow designs and appendages, such as ship propellers, propeller nozzles and rudder systems.
In cooperation with our partners, we support sustainability, emission-reduction and decarbonization projects with low-emission technologies, systems and products for carbon dioxide reduction (CO2), nitrogen oxide reduction (NOx), particulate matter reduction (PM), energy efficiency, operational availability and compliance.
Within energy efficiency and fuel savings, this includes waste heat recovery systems (WHRS), wind-assisted propulsion systems (WAPS), air lubrication systems (ALS), biocide-free antifouling solutions and Energy Saving Devices (ESDs), such as Pre-Swirl Stators (PSS), Pre-Ducts, Propeller Boss Cap Fins (PBCF), Twisted Rudders and Rudder Bulbs.
For propulsion and hydrodynamic optimization, we support projects involving resistance reduction, wake optimization and propulsion efficiency. This includes efficient components and systems for propulsion and manoeuvrability, such as CFD-optimized ship propellers, propeller nozzles, complete rudder systems and Controllable Pitch Propeller (CPP) blades.
In addition, we support emission and environmental systems, including Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems, diesel particulate filter (DPF) systems and ultraviolet (UV)-based ballast water treatment systems.
With an international partner network of specialised manufacturers, innovative maritime technology companies, consultants and service providers, Berger Maritiem helps clients assess technologies, products and solutions realistically and apply them effectively within operational vessel environments.
Within our maritime niche, we therefore look beyond a single technology, service, supplier or product line, allowing sustainability, operational performance and practical applicability to be assessed together. For each vessel type, operating profile, deployment profile, emission target and investment horizon, we assess multiple solution pathways while also considering retrofit strategy for existing vessels.
This allows technical feasibility, operational suitability, emission targets and investment considerations to be evaluated together, enabling the most suitable solution to be implemented in practice.
Since 2013, Berger Maritiem has supported a wide range of maritime companies in vessel sustainability projects focused on more energy-efficient, lower-emission and long-term operational vessels, fleets and business activities. Our experience ranges from individual entrepreneurs and family-owned businesses to larger maritime organisations and publicly listed shipping companies, with feasibility, reliability, operational suitability and long-term applicability remaining central considerations.
From our office in the Netherlands, near Rotterdam, one of Europe’s principal maritime hubs, we serve clients throughout the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg (Benelux) and support sustainable maritime projects across Europe and beyond. Through our international network of selected partners, we provide worldwide access to maritime technologies, systems, products and solutions. Where possible, this is supplemented with local or regional technical service, support and implementation, ensuring solutions remain operationally viable outside the Benelux region as well.
